Assignment: Food

With the exception of exactly two three people, everyone posted some format of sugar for this week’s Project52 Assignment: Food. The vast majority of them by far were sugary confections: dozens of cupcakes, muffins, cookies and other baked sweets. Running far behind in second place came fruits: one bowl of oranges; one portrait of two pairs; a closeup of blueberries; a bowl of strawberries; a sliced orange. In third came starchy vegetables: a sliced potato with onions (raw); a sliced carrot (raw). The carrot is my go-to vegetable when I am craving sugar. It is nice and juicy and lightly sweet.

The three non-carb submissions were: a bottle of wine; the contents of a refrigerator (plenty sweets inside, but it was not a photo of sweets); and lastly, two eggs. The eggs were my absolute favorite. One brown, one speckled on a worn tabletop. Round. Warm.

Then, there was me. The title of my post was “Food for Microbes!” Technically speaking, it is incorrect. My food is infested with thousands of macroscopic creatures. Following is my post.

“Getting food to our tables eats up 10 percent of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50 percent of U.S. land, and swallows 80 percent of freshwater consumed in the United States. Yet, 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten. That is more than 20 pounds of food per person every month. Not only does this mean that Americans are throwing out the equivalent of $165 billion each year, but also 25 percent of all freshwater and huge amounts of unnecessary chemicals, energy, and land. Moreover, almost all of that uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills where it accounts for almost 25 percent of U.S. methane emissions.”

I take in homeless food waste. In winter, not much happens to it. Freeze-thaw breaks down cell membranes.

Spring comes. Today I mixed the food with old leaves and woodchips.

Iris Turns TWO!

Iris comes into our bed at a ridiculously early hour each morning.

“What do you want to do today?” I asked.

“Cows,” she said.

“You want to see the cows?” I said.

“Milking,” she said.

“You want to go to the farm to see the cows getting milked?” I said.

She nodded, then continued nursing.

We spent all morning at New Village Farm.

Potty

4-4-14-1200

I took a bunch of photos of Iris on the pot. None of them turned out good enough, mainly because the focus was on the pants instead of on her head. Then, later I tried bouncing the flash off the white ceiling so that I could increase the aperture and decrease the ISO, but I got quite harsh shadows, so I won’t even show you those photos. I’m supposed to bounce the light off the white wall behind me, but unfortunately the wall behind me was green. This would have given me a baby incredible hulk, which was not what I was aiming for. So I’ll have to go back and try again.

Mom + Dad

I really wanted to take more photos when I went home.

(And by home I mean the place I left over 20 years ago.)

I wanted to take some formal and some posed photos.

But things kept happening.

Like, I had the awfulest time sleeping because Iris had the awfulest time sleeping.

So I didn’t get around to taking half the photos I dreamed up.

Actually, I didn’t get around to taking any photos I dreamed up.

Here’s an old photo of Mom & Dad that I really like a lot:

Β

Β

Okay, so I can critique it:

The composition should be vertical instead of horizontal and I don’t like the shadow on Dad’s face.

Maybe it’s just proof that any old photo of one’s folks together is better than no photo at all.

Who knows?

But I really like it.

I wanted Mom & Dad to pose together sorta the same,

tho without Cate,

as she now lives in Napa, CA and was unable to come home for the weekend.

Instead, I took some photos of Dad sitting on Mom’s lap.

Okay, so I can critique them:

I don’t like the frame surrounding Dad’s head or the background business.

I didn’t want to crop it tightly, because I like how Dad is sitting on Mom’s lap.

My camera lens it wide angle, so it accentuates the longness of Dad’s long legs.

But I really like the photos. A lot

Maybe it’s just proof that any old photo of one’s folks together is better than no photo at all.

Who knows?

@ Grandma & Gramps’ House

Ari and Mom (a.k.a. Grandma) went to the regional market and found a nice plump little toddler.

They put her in their basket and brought her home.

Later, Dad (a.k.a. Gramps) was found sleeping.

He probably thinks he looks old in this photo, but I love it.

I love him, too.

He is 71.

Spring Flowers

Iris & I went to visit Mom, a.k.a. Gramma.

This is the first flower I saw in her yard.

Then I looked up andβ€”

Lo!β€”

a carpet of spring flowers surrounded me.

Mousse de Nombril

When Iris was seven months old,

her favorite game to play with Papa when he came home was Taste the Name Tag.

The rules were simple, but the game could last quite a while.

mousse-2388

These days, their games are more complex.

Mousse!” says Iris, then commands her father (in French)

to lie on his back and hand her the little LED light.

She proceeds to examine his nombril

in order to extract the copious amounts of mousse

that form after a day’s hard work sitting in front of a computer wearing a white T-shirt.

Β

mousse-1028

For any of you who are wondering if this mousse is the same as

(1) the sweet fluffy chocolatey stuff commonly served as a dessert

or

(2) the lightly scented hair product used by some people with hair on their heads

the answer is yes,

both.
