Out of the desert darkness drove
a rattling compact sedanβ four doors andβ¨
THE CHARIOT! emblazoned on the side.
The letters spoke of triumphββ¨
and of speedβ and soβ¨
I stepped inside.
The driver was a manβ¨
of any ageβ I canβt recall his faceββ¨
O! but his eyesββ¨
two disks that spun like flaming wheelsβ
β¨Iβd hailed a taxicab and caught
β¨some new-born sun god as my guide.
He drove fastβ swerved through trafficβ
β¨turned tight cornersβ ignored signsββ¨
I do not know how long we sped.β¨
I cannot tell you where we went.
β¨I could not look outside the car.
β¨I only saw insideβ insideββ¨
the speedβ the noiseβ the flashing lights
β¨flew byβ flew byβ flew byβ
all the while he never moved
β¨his hypnotizing eyes from mine
We stoppedβ and then the car was goneβ
β¨I stood exactly where Iβd been.
The night was dark. The air was dry.
My journey faded into dream.β¨
I cannot tell you where I went
and Iβm not sure of what Iβve seenβ
β¨but one timeβ when I stood in darknessβ
I hailed THE CHARIOT!
and took a ride.
