Breakfast at our house

In celebration of Akiva’s last day being two, Iris dresses up and Papa reads “The Librarian on the Roof” and Akiva does truck puzzles and no one really pays much attention to breakfast, tho it does all get eaten eventually.

Dress of Birds

I made another dress!

It looks adorable because there is an adorable girl wearing it.

It is good for spinningβ€”

β€”and twirlingβ€”

β€”and dancingβ€”

β€”and it is also good for pockets.

People who have seen my dolls may recognize the fabricsβ€”

and the over-sized pockets.

Grand View of the Playground (Val-Estrie)

After dropping Iris off at school, we park the bike on the property next door.

We explore the little bridge that goes across the little river.

On the far side of the little river there is

a little community garden and a little barn with a little yard for little chickens.

On the near side of the little river is the playground.

The swings are off to the right in the above photo.

Beyond the swings, up the little hill, is a little fence.

Then there is the little river that divides the playground from the little farm & garden area.

Using this type of swing is a bit of a balancing actβ€”

β€”they are dumping swings.

If you manage to sit on them, their is a good chance they will dump you off.

They are also leaning swings, for people who don’t like dumping swings.

I love the see-saws.

I especially appreciate the extra care they put into inserting the handle bolts from the bottom.

This way, when the see-saw is being swiftly lowered onto an unsuspecting person’s body

(it happens!)

they don’t get the extra bother of having rusty bolts puncture their flesh.

It is not allowed to place tires in playgrounds anymore.

The grass is greener on this side.

Akiva is king of the lonely playground.

Ruines de la Mine d’Eustis / Ruins of the Eustis Mine

Earth Day, 2018

“The Eustis mine was known in turn as the Lower Canada (1865), Hartford (1866-1872), Crown (1872-1888), and Eustis (1888-1939) mine. With a depth of 2,260 meters, for many years it was the deepest copper mine in Canada… The barren rock extracted during the shaft sinking and the manual sorting operations was dumped along the banks of Ruisseau Eustis (now known as the Eustis 2 site). The mine closed down in 1939.”

“Environmental problems at this site are nothing new. In the early days of mining here, the sulfur contained in the ore was eliminated by roasting the ore on a bed of hot coal, which would burn for about 70 days as the sulfur oxidized. The roasting process released sulfur emissions that affected the surrounding environment and had a harmful effect on livestock and human health.”

“In 1983 samples taken by MinistΓ¨re de l’Environnement revealed that the water in Ruisseau Eustis was extremely acidic, with a pH of 2.3. In 2003 Berryman2 detected concentrations of cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc in Ruisseau Eustis that were respectively 41; 2,490; 67; 25; and 65 times higher than criteria for the protection of aquatic life. As for RiviΓ¨re Massawippi, it is contaminated by both the Eustis 1 site and the high levels of heavy metals in Ruisseau Eustis.”

Mme. Kate’s Garden

We do some volunteer work around the school yardβ€”

we move decomposing straw bales around and whatnot.

Iris and Akiva love volunteer work!
